Tumut River

The Tumut River is one of the major tributaries of the Murrumbidgee River, running through the beautiful Tumut Valley. It's a popular spot for a variety of outdoor activities, especially if you enjoy water-based adventures.

Fishing

The Tumut River is renowned for its excellent trout fishing, particularly brown trout and rainbow trout. Whether you're a novice or an experienced angler, the river offers plenty of spots for a relaxing day of fishing. You can fish from the banks or take a boat out in certain areas (depending on river levels).

Canoeing and kayaking

The Tumut River is also a fantastic place for kayaking or canoeing. Its calm waters are ideal for beginners, while the more experienced can enjoy the occasional rapid section further downstream. It’s a peaceful way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area, with the added bonus of spotting wildlife along the riverbanks.

Swimming and water recreation

In the warmer months, the river provides a great place for a refreshing swim. Several spots along the Tumut River are popular for swimming, such as the Tumut River Walk area. If you’re up for a more relaxed day, it’s also a great place for picnicking and just soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

Walking and cycling trails

The Tumut River Walk is a beautiful walking track that follows the river, offering scenic views and plenty of opportunities for birdwatching. The river is also a focal point for local cycling routes, so if you enjoy cycling, you can combine a river ride with great countryside views.

Blowering Dam

Located just outside the town of Tumut, Blowering Dam is a popular recreational spot, especially for those looking to enjoy a day on the water. It’s also part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme and is a focal point for the region.

Fishing

Blowering Dam is a popular spot for fishing, especially for Murray cod and yellowbelly. It’s a peaceful location to cast a line and enjoy the natural surroundings. The dam is well-stocked, and many anglers return for its consistent fishing opportunities.

Boating and water sports

The dam is a great spot for boating and water sports like waterskiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. The waters are generally calm, and there are designated areas for water sports enthusiasts to enjoy a day on the lake. There are also boat ramps for easy access.

Camping

There are several campgrounds around the Blowering Dam area, making it an excellent destination for an overnight stay or weekend getaway. Camping by the dam gives you the opportunity to wake up to incredible lake views, with options for both powered and unpowered sites, depending on your preference.

Picnicking and BBQ areas

If you prefer a more relaxed day, there are designated picnic spots with BBQ facilities around the dam. It’s an ideal spot to unwind with friends or family, enjoy a meal, and maybe even go for a swim afterward.

Birdwatching

Blowering Dam, with its wide-open spaces and nearby wetlands, is also a great place for birdwatching. The area attracts a variety of native bird species, and you might catch a glimpse of waterfowl or even eagles flying overhead.

Hiking

While Blowering Dam itself doesn’t have a huge network of hiking trails, there are nearby tracks that explore the surrounding landscape. You can find walking routes that offer great views over the dam and valley, with some more rugged sections leading to elevated spots for spectacular panoramic views.

Scenic views

The drive around the dam provides beautiful scenic views of the surrounding mountains, forested areas, and the water. It’s a perfect spot for photography, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light hits the water just right.
